- Receive medical attention – If necessary, call 911 for emergency services or go to the hospital immediately after an accident. If injured, attend your family physician’s office as soon as possible after the accident for assessment and treatment. Report all symptoms to your physician and continue with regular visits until you have recovered completely or as best as possible. Follow your physician’s advice and that of any other professionals you may be referred to.
- Document the collision – It is important to properly document the collision. After the accident, immediately exchange information with the other driver and verify the driver’s license, insurance and license plate number. Remember, you have no obligation to discuss the accident with the other driver. Get names, addresses and phone numbers of all drivers, witnesses, police officers and emergency personnel involved. Obtain a copy of the police motor vehicle accident report. Make detailed observations of the accident scene and the road conditions at the time of the collision. If possible, make written notes and take pictures of the scene and the car.
- Report the accident to ICBC – It is mandatory to report all motor vehicle accidents that occur in B.C. to ICBC even when ICBC is not the insurer for the vehicles involved. Call ICBC to report the accident as soon as possible, or have legal representation do so on your behalf.
